Astronauts go on 2nd spacewalk

Astronauts are out on another spacewalk at the international space station.

Steven Swanson and Joseph Acaba floated outside early Saturday afternoon. They will be handling batteries and antennas, chores that will lighten the workload for future crews. They will also photograph radiators.

Some of the work was added just this past week after a later spacewalk had to be canceled because of shuttle Discovery's repeated launch delays.

The astronauts' work will take them to the far end of the space station's framework, which holds the solar wings. There could be some induced electrical voltage there, but NASA says the risk of shock is small and well within acceptable limits.

On Thursday, Swanson and another astronaut installed the last set of solar wings. The panels were opened Friday.

Google 'unlikely' to buy Twitter soon

Google has a short message for those wondering whether the search giant will buy micro-blogging site Twitter: "unlikely." That was Google CEO Eric Schmidt's response Friday when queried on the topic during a wide-ranging interview with journalist Charlie Rose.

Rose didn't press Schmidt for more perspective on the micro-blogging site. But earlier in the week during an on-stage chat at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco, Schmidt called Twitter a "poor man's" e-mail system. "They have aspects of an e-mail system, but they do not have a full offering," he said at the conference.

"Twitter's success is wonderful and it shows you that there are many, many ways to reach and communicate, especially if you are willing to do so publicly," he said that day while touting the success of Google's instant messaging system.

Upcoming world's cheapest mobile

Venezuela is to start selling in May a mobile phone it is billing as one of the world's cheapest: a $US14 ($21.57) handset that includes an mp3 player, radio and camera.

President Hugo Chavez unveiled the phone - named "El Vergatario" - today, saying it would be produced by a joint Venezuelan-Chinese firm and marketed across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The firm, Vetelca, is 85 per cent controlled by Mr Chavez's government, with the remainder owned by ZTE of China.

Vetelca plans to make four million of the units per year in association with another Chinese company, Huawei.

Other cheap handsets are being developed around the world aimed at the huge market of poorer consumers unable to afford the iPhones and Nokias favoured in wealthier countries.

India already has a device it calls the "people's phone" sold at around the same price as El Vergatario.

Apple announces new Mac Pro, tweaks iMac and Mac Mini!!!

The company unveiled a new Mac Pro high-end desktop powered by Intel's "Nehalem" processor, a new and more graphics-intensive Mac Mini machine, and updated iMacs that include the lowest price point yet for the consumer desktops.

Let's look at the new Mac Pro first: priced at $2,499 for the quad-core version and $3,299 for the eight-core version, those Intel "Nehalem" Xeon processors run at 2.93 GHz, and the interior of the machine has been cleaned up to make physical expansions easier. On the green front, it meets the new Energy Star 5.0 requirements that will go into effect later this year.

The new iMac desktop is a 24" machine that is priced at $1,499, the cost of Apple's previous 20" iMac. The 20-inch is now $1,199. The 20" is powered by a 2.66 GHz processor; the 24" has processor speed options of 2.66 GHz, 2.93 GHz (for $1,799), or 3.02 GHz (for $2,199).

The 24" comes with a 640GB hard drive and 4GB of RAM expandable to 8GB; the 20" comes with a 320GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM expandable to 8GB.

As for the new Mac Mini, the big upgrade is NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics that Apple says will improve its graphics performance as much as fivefold.

The monitor-free machine costs either $599 for a lower-end edition (1GB RAM, 120GB hard drive) or $799 for the higher-end (2GB RAM, 320GB hard drive).

All these machines, like the new Mac Pro, meet Energy Star 5.0 requirements.

Microsoft fixes IE 8

Microsoft has issued a fix for Internet Explorer 8 contained in the Windows 7 beta.


The update is strictly for users running the Windows 7 beta. The company said that many of the same fixes for the Windows XP and Vista versions of the browser had been placed into last month's release candidate update.

Program manager Herman Ng said in a blog posting that the update should address many of the most common stability problems in Windows 7. "This update will address many of the top crashes and hangs from the Windows 7 Beta, which includes those caused by Internet Explorer as well as 3rd party components like Adobe Flash, Adobe Acrobat, and several others".

The update comes as both products near their release. While IE 8 has been described by Microsoft developers as 'effectively done,' the company has also revealed that it will be taking Windows 7 out of beta status.

While the official target time frame for release is the first quarter of 2010, some have speculated that the new version of Windows could be on store shelves in time for Christmas.
